As we walk down the path of life, we will encounter some storms. Some of these storms are bigger and scarier than others. Sometimes, it's storming on your life while others have sunshine. Storms will come and go. Some could last an hour and some could last a day or two. You might even go through a long period of time without a storm. When these storms come, who do you look to? Do you look to your friends? Your family? Your spouse? Although they might be able to provide a little bit of shelter, there is Someone we can look to that can clam storms. That Someone is Jesus.
"Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him saying, 'Lord, save us! We are perishing!' But He said to them, 'Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?' Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. So the men marveled, saying, 'Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?' (Matthew 8:23-27)." Jesus has the ability to not only calm rain storms, but also our storms of life. When it storms, I don't get scared if it's just thundering a little bit. When a storm gets extremely fierce, I get scared. I get scared because I don't know what's going to happen. I'm the same way for the storms of life; I can handle the little storms pretty okay, but when the storms get fierce, I can't handle it. I tend to forget Who the Great Calmer is during these storms. I forget that there is Someone who will calm the storm and protect me. I don't like enduring storms on my own and I don't have to, because God will be with me. When there's a tornado warning near me, I go to our bathroom for shelter and I pray to God, asking Him to protect us and keep us safe. I get pretty scared, but after I pray, I am no longer scared. I'm no longer scared because I believe that God will answer my prayer and that He will protect us. So far, my prayers have been answered. I use the same tactic to calm my storms in life. When times get rough, I pray to God, asking Him to protect me, to help me, and to guide me. Some parts of our lives will be more stormier than others. It might even rain on your life while others around you have sunshine. We all have different storms that come and go at different times. Sometimes, your storm will effect others around you. You need to remember that you can't calm the storm on your own. You have to look to Jesus in order to obtain shelter. Jesus is like our umbrella during the rain, He protects us from the dangers. Although He is our umbrella, we can't "put" Him away and only "bring" Him out when it starts to rain. We need to constantly be looking unto Him. Even when it's not raining, you can be harmed. The sun can burn you. If you use an umbrella in the sun, you can still feel the warmth and still be protected from the harmful things. Without storms in life, we wouldn't know the true joy of having sunshine. Are you fearful and have little faith like the disciples in Matthew chapter 8? Or do you have great faith and trust that God will calm your storms if you ask Him to? Don't be afraid. Don't be discouraged. Look unto Jesus, the Great Calmer. By: Jennifer Odom
